Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
