Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
