A person who spiked treats with tranquilliser and distributed them to minors at a summer camp in the region has admitted sexual crimes against two children aged between nine and ten.

The defendant was arrested after eight children and one adult became sick at the facility in mid-summer.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he stood at the judicial center on the end of the week.

However, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was facing, which was against a nine-year-old child.

Ruben was remanded in custody before a further hearing on late November.

'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, detailed the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She said his targets were disadvantaged youngsters who were participating in a youth camp which he operated.

The man conducted a "candy game" with the children, the prosecutor stated, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were getting ready for bed and request they to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She told the court the defendant had engaged in this activity with the boys "for many years", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She explained Ruben had been capable of justifying this repeatedly as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had suspicions in recently.

Mrs Prior KC continued: "In the summer" his stepson had concerns about the situation, justifiably.

"They resolved" to have a look in the individual's items."

The legal counsel said items including lubricant, Vaseline and medical needles were discovered, and his stepchild notified the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She stated the defendant went on to engage in the "candy game" with six children that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the following morning.

"Law enforcement" had not gone out by that point," she continued.

The police watchdog, the police conduct office, previously told that it was reviewing the police response of the incident.

The prosecutor said the youngsters were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the authorities again.

She explained Ruben then played the "candy game" in a area of five youngsters.
